What are the Wainwright Hills?

The Wainwrights are the 214 hills described by Alfred Wainwright in his 7 volume Pictoral Guide to the Lake District fells. The list does not depend on height, merely on the premise that Wainwright deemed the hill worthy of a mention! The more we hear of nit-pickers who want to see if one mountain is 10cm lower or higher than whatever, the more we like his approach. The list will never change because an impressive hill has been re-surveyed and found not worthy and your peak is now crossed out rather than ticked off. Wainwright took the mountain or hill on merit, and that the peak was worth climbing and including your day’s walk. Follow and heed his advice, you won’t be disappointed!

His books remain the standard classification of the Lake District mountains and the one we follow for our Lake District Walks.

The areas of the Lake District according to Wainwright are; Lake District – Southern Fells, Lake District – Eastern Fells,  Lake District – Northern Fells, Lake District – Western Fells, Lake District – North Western Fells, Lake District – Far Eastern Fells, Lake District – Central Fells.
