Scafell Pike via Cam Spout From Hardknott Pass

The route up Scafell Pike via Cam Spout is a quiet, lesser known walk that sets off from near Boot in Eskdale to the south. This is a full outing that returns down the Little Narrowcove route up Scafell Pike. You’ll avoid the hordes of people from the Wasdale side, as well as the starting point being a bit nearer to the M6 than Wasdale Head. This route follows the River Esk on both banks for most of it’s length, with a gentle and gradual walk in. The final section to the summit of Scafell Pike is much steeper, whether you choose to go via Cam Spout or Little Narrowcove.

There’s also a scramble up and over Dow Crag that can be used as an alternative to the direct walk up Scafell Pike via Cam Spout itself. All three routes are detailed further in the excellent Cicerone guidebook, The Mid-Western Fells by Mark Richards on pages 228 and 229, and we highly recommend this along with the standard ORDNANCE SURVEY Explorer OL6 – SW Lakes Map.

  1. Ban people who feel they can walk up in flip flops, jelly’s and other stupid footware. You are in big mountains. Learn to read a compass and map and stop asking people if ‘is this the path to the top of scafell pike’. For goodness sake you’re in the mountain. Deal with it.
