The Highest Mountains in England

While Scafell Pike is the Highest Mountain in England at 978m, there are well over a 100 summits in England over 609m in height (or the historic measure of 2000feet) with at least 30m drop all around. Most of the English mountains can be found in the Lake District, but there are a number of other areas that make the list. The highest English mountain outside the Lakes is Cross Fell in the North Pennines, the 10th highest in England. It’s an impressive 893m in height and an expansive mountain that has no easy approaches. Other notable areas of English Mountains are the Yorkshire Dales which include the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks of Ingelborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent – with Whernside the highest point in the Dales.

Northumberland National Park also boasts some of England’s highest peaks, with The Cheviot topping out at 815 metres. Many are surprised that Kinder Scout, despite it’s immense popularity, is a lowly peak at only 637 metres in height and languishes around the bottom of the list at 156th highest mountain. Even further south, we find the summit of High Willhays on Dartmoor. There used to be a mountain in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons – Black Mountain – but this is now included as one of the Welsh mountains as it complicates the hill lists. Here we were, thinking that complicating things was the whole point of hill lists…

Here’s a list of the 179 Hewitts (Hills in England and Wales and Ireland over Two Thousand Feet – so surely the Hewittfs?) hills in England.
