Scafell Pike via the Cowcove zig-zags and Cam Spout

This remote walking route up Scafell Pike from Eskdale is a variation on the Scafell Pike via Cam Spout From Hardknott Pass route that follows the zig-zags at Cowcove rather than following the River Esk. You’ll more than likely be alone on this walk, with any route from Eskdale attracting significantly fewer walkers than the more popular Wasdale and Seathwaite approaches.

The route starts off from Whahouse Bridge near Boot in Eskdale before heading up along the River Esk to Scale Brodge before it begins ascending past Scale Gill along the zig-zags. The path traverses on a flatter course to rejoin the River Esk further up the valley before ascending to Mickledore via How Beck and on to the summit of Scafell Pike. You can bag Scafell on the ascent if you wanted, but if you wanted to include Scafell from Eskdale, then it would be better to ascend via Slight Side before descending to Foxes Tarn an along to Mickledore and on to Scafell Pike from there.

Alternatively, you can walk the Scafell Pike from Eskdale via Pen route, for an interesting route that avoids Mickledore.
